Lincoln Heights
Lincoln Heights is a Los Angeles community off downtown just east of Chinatown. Its one of the oldest communities in the city. Previously one of the wealthiest neighborhoods in the city as industrial development encroached around the turn of the century it became poorer and poorer. At one point the community was home to an alligator farm, ostrich farm, motor speedway and movie studio.
Today the community is yet another struggling neighborhood in Los Angeles. However Lincoln Heights has inspired not one but two blogs and a brand new television program on the ABC Family Channel aptly titled Lincoln Heights.
The show follows an (presumedly LAPD) African-American LAPD officer - Eddie Sutton - who has been living somewhere in the suburbs (looks like Sherman Oaks or maybe Tarzana) in a cramped apartment with his wife and three teenaged children.
I say presumedly LAPD because in the pilot the cars and uniforms do not display the LAPD logo or name. Assumedly the producers did not choose to license the name and logo from the city. It is a cable show - budgets are lower. At least in the pilot its not made definitively clear that this Lincoln Heights is in Los Angeles but many of the locations used are definitely LA.
Taking advantage of a department program that provides financing to officers who buy a home in the hood (similar to the Clinton era "Officer Next Door" program) Sutton moves his family to a Victorian fixer-upper that had just wrapped duty as a crack house. Its mentioned in the script that Sutton grew up not too far from his new home.
The new home affords the Sutton family far more room and luxury than their apartment did, however the neighborhood is another story. The family gets the cold shoulder from the neighborhood (due to Eddie being a cop). Shortly after moving in their home is burglarized. And the kids aren't fitting in at school ranging from the oldest girl only finding friendship with a loner boy the other students don't know anything about, the middle child not getting time to play on the girls' basketball team and the youngest boy being extorted by other students.
Eventually the family settles in but not before a tragic event occurs that will have significant impact on Eddie. (I won't spoil it in case you haven't seen the show yet.)
It will be interesting to watch this show and see how reflective it is of the real Lincoln Heights. Not many television shows these days are based in Los Angeles, especially police related dramas. Lincoln Heights airs on ABC Family Monday nights at 7:00 p.m. (with frequent repeats throughout the week).
You can read about the history of the community at the History of Lincoln Heights web page. Below is a real life video of Lincoln Heights.

By the way - in case anyone was wondering - this is not a "blog-o-mercial" but a review of a TV show that touches on life in LA.

I used to work in Lincoln Heights. It's easy to see from just driving around that it was at one time a very nice place.
Are there any black families *actually* living there now, or is that only in the TV series?

There arent any Blacks in Lincoln Heights. This used to be an Italian enclave, but they intermarried with the Mexicans that followed and all that remains of the Italian community is St. Peter's church in nearby Chinatown. It is now predominantly Asian - Vietnamese and Chinese. The Vietnamese are the new Cholos of Lincoln Heights, they dress exactly like the Mexican Cholos. But as with all immigrant neighborhoods in L.A., Jews are still the landlords. The major landholder is Steve Kasten - he wons virtually all of North Broadway.

Lincoln Heights is the worst show portraying that officer as LAPD. You would think they would have a consultant like other shows. Its no unrealistic and shows the blacks very negatively and with the same stereotypes.
Cops will never move into LA because its an officer safety issue. If the thugs are shooting at them now for no reason can you believe what they would do if they found out where they live in the city? It would be too easy for them to do drive bys to their families when they're not home. Hell no.....officers will never move into this corrupt city.

7:29 - So you want police officers to live within 5 miles of where they patrol... I didn't think anyone was capable of making dumber comments than our current batch of elected officials - evidently, I was wrong!
Your logic shoul also dictate that firefighters should live within 5 miles of their firehouse - so they can fight fires better!

You forgot to mention he fired a male staffer who was paid more so he could hire 5 little cholitas that could stroke his bald head ego. He's always seen at community events getting into and out of cars with the little latina chicks. I guess he's going through a mid life crisis.
Anonymous said:
Incompetant though he may be, it is not Reyes' responsibility to solove all of Lincoln Heights' problems. The community as a whole has very little ownership of it's own problems.
Anonymous said:
No, I disagree. The welfare of the community is the responsibility of its leaders. We have a poor leader, and we privately call him "Do-Nuthin" because he don't do anything!
However that's all a moot point when in a few years we'll get Fabian Nunez shoved down our throat - rumor has it that he's going to carpet bag in like his little buddy Kevin and run for CD1.

In the student goverment classroom at Lincoln High school. Their was a photo board that became known as the "BOARD OF FELONS". Pictured was Art Snyder, Richard Alatorre, Mike Hernandez and others.
Also lets not forget that Lincoln Heights is also the home of "FLAT TOP". Many a good parties were commenced on that hill top.

9:13 AM anon, the reason that people want cops to live in/near the areas they patrol is that they're sick and tired of redneck Castaic-dwellers coming into their neighborhoods and acting like they're fucking conquistadores sent into the "jungle" to pacify the black and brown savages. (I've seen a number of off-duty officers in Newton Division wearing "Shootin' Newton" T-shirts depicting a skull with a bullet hole in it. That's real high-class, oh yeah.) Police departments in general tend to attract a lot of thuggish white men who want to be seen as authority figures, but LAPD--despite a lot of reform--still has a certain magnetism for this particular antisocial type.

What the Hell does the program Lincoln Heights T.V land have to do with Lincoln Heights, Los Angeles.
Anonymous said:
Ah, the agonizing results of exercise of free speech.
Demographics of Lincoln Heights (and personal observations) show that YES, black families dwell in the area and the neighborhood is NOT predominantly Southeast Asian. It continues to thrive with the Latino population as the majority.
Pinpointing the sociopolitical flaws of Lincoln Heights is a mistake. It rejects the historical value and commercial flow of the area, as well as the different assets available and accessible to residents. But nevertheless, that is why LH Neighborhood Council and other organizations within the area exist--to address issues that hinder LH's development.
And I fail to see the substantial relationship between the TV show and the neighborhood as well!
