Paging the Flight Crew
According to CNS, Los Angeles Mayor Antonio Villaraigosa heads to Boston tomorrow, where he is scheduled to attend a conference for new mayors from across the country.Villaraigosa, who took office July 1, will address other new mayors and students and faculty from John F. Kennedy School's Institute of Politics at Harvard University at 6 p.m. tomorrow, mayoral spokesman Joe Ramallo said.
The mayor is scheduled to leave Los Angeles tomorrow morning and return Thursday morning, Ramallo said.
Villaraigosa's trip to Boston will be paid in full by Harvard University, Ramallo said.
No word on which flight Harvard will be paying for. If you need your flight uniforms, you can check here!

We should--every one of us--remain aloof, in heart and in mind, in words and in deeds, from the political affairs and disputes of the Nations and of Governments. Baha'is should be very careful in their public utterance not to mention any political figures...either side with them or denounce them. We should keep ourselves away from such thoughts. While you're wondering about flight arrangements, I'm kinda wondering if Antonio leaned on the people who own the old Hollywood Tropicana to put up a big Jose Huizar banner on the building, one you can still see there today. That building is nowhere near the 14th.
This doesn't seem like something Jose would be incautious enough to do himself, as the building was being considered as a school site up through summer of this year. Weird to see a billboard sized banner for a candidate so far out of the district in which he's running. Weird that the building is on a site connected to LAUSD expansion. Weird.
Same thing can be said for candidates who air commercials in parts of the city -- where their voters don't live?

He promoted the recall of Davis, Antonio Villaraigosa for Mayor and now the Huizar candidacy.
It's placement helps promote a candidate to voters that live in CD 14, although the building may not be.
Something that happens when you campaign i guess.
Saw on the news today that Magic Johnson endorsed that Phil Angildes guy for governor. What happened to Magic after the mayor campaign? He's been out of sight. Everyone thought he would endorse Tony.

That's disingenuous. It's not part of what happens when you campaign. You don't go advertising far outside your district if you can help it.
This is a building owned by someone who obviously wouldn't mind currying favor with the new Mayor, as he has, I believe, not one but two buildings up for eminent domain takeover. I don't blame him for trying to curry favor; any commercial building owner would want to do as much.
But I am inclined to blame whichever pol thought it was a good idea to use a commercial building the School District had its eyes on to flaunt Jose's otherwise inconsequential name to Hollywood freeway commuters heading to points nowhere near the district. It's a lacking sensibility, and it again speaks to the kind of Arrogance of Power we've already seen too often from eastside politicians.

The Pied Piper of Sacramento - oops, of Los Angeles - Mayor Villaraigosa, is playing the tune "Let's Take Over LAUSD." What does this man know about running a school district? Nothing. Back in the day, when he was the speaker of the California Assembly, he talked us down the road to bankruptcy and false hopes. Action speaks louder that words, mayor. Where's your plan?
LAUSD's management has turned the corner in improving our schools and like any responsible organization or person, they have learned from their mistakes and are moving ahead. The glass is half-full, Villaraigosa. Your strengths are in building consensus; use them. Your current campaign is costing everyone time and money. Save your hot air for another topic. It's time to change your tune.

Before you jump into the tide condemning the greedy teachers receiving a 2.5 percent increase, just remember that one of the last actions of our Congress before it recessed for Turkey Day was to vote themselves a 3 percent cost of living raise.
Time for a little re-evaluation of our priorities.

'Magic' Johnson Passes Support To Angelides For Governor

5:33 at the rate Antonio is becoming a "do nothing mayor" Magic would be great to have as LA mayor. AT least he's a businessman who knows how to make things happen.
The back scrathing will not be for the TROPICANA where the sign is hanging. The back scratching is going to come in for the FLORENTINE GARDENS on Hollywood Boulevard. It is owned by the same couple Kenny & Maria. They don't want the city to domain the property for a Fire Department training facilty and fire house. They have been conducting a fierce lobbying effort of all City Council members. Plus they did several fund raisings events for Villababoso and his mijo 'Mini Me" Huizar.
Meanwhile, over and over and over again, the union-dominated education establishment resists every attempt, no matter how tiny or incremental, to introduce accountability to the system by objectively evaluating teacher performance. Innovations such as charter schools are opposed vehemently because they present a different model that could show up the bureaucratic model that is the public school norm. School board members elected by unions think nothing of offering contracts that make it impossible to fire incompetent teachers or granting lavish pensions that districts will never be available to afford.
The system couldn't be more dysfunctional or resistant to improvement, and it's all because it is dominated by teachers unions infinitely more interested in preserving jobs and increasing pay and benefits than in helping kids.
Against this backdrop, the decision of Villaraigosa - a Democrat with impeccable progressive credentials - to take on the United Teachers Los Angeles and their allies on the Los Angeles school board could finally open the eyes of liberals to the paradox of their alliance with the most reactionary force in American life: the teachers unions who desperately defend the discredited education status quo.
"I will not accept the status quo, and neither should you," Villaraigosa told a luncheon audience in Los Angeles last week. If only many more progressives reached the same conclusion, we could see real progress in our schools at long last. Go, Antonio, go.
