CD 14 Weekend Activities

On Saturday, Nick Pacheco organized 60 people with about 25 trash cans and marched to Huizar's campaign office to hand Mayor Villaraigosa the letter below. (click image to enlarge)

They waited from 9:00 AM to 11:45 AM because the Huizar flyer's pimping the Mayor's appearance mentioned he would be there at 9:00 AM.

Basically, Pacheco wants the Mayor to publicly guarantee to the seniors and low-income families that a trash pick-up fee will not be used to balance the budget.

No word on wether they tracked him down, but I'm guessing no.

In other news, the LA Times ran two pieces, Pacheco Aims to Reclaim His Lost Job and Huizar Has the Cash and Key Backers. Rick Orlov in the Daily News Tip-Off coulmn writes about new mailers in CD 14, and the LA Downtown News editorializes with the following article, Two Distinct Choices in 14th Council District Race

Good for Pacheco being proactive. Jose wants to also charge trash fee. Jose has endorsers and money because Antonio told them they better or else.

Downtown news states "Trouble with Jose is he doesn't know the district intimately." Yeah, and the district doesn't know him.

Jose, if you care so much about the community you grew up in why wasn't a new high school built THIS YEAR for Roosevelt? Why are there 2 new high schools in South LA?

L.A. Downtown News Editorial missed one thing for me, more on how each candidate is campaigning.

The story is good, but it could use a bit more on how each candidate is taking it towards the neg or pos.

What candidate is campaigning on their own merits and which candidates are using sloppy seconds to push their image. Who is authentic and who is fake.

It was about time someone had the GUTS to write a letter. Pacheco you speak for working parents who are on a limited budget too and find it difficult to give more money to the city just to balance books.

We manage our books fine at home and we do not ask our family for money. When things get hard, guess what we do? We make cuts on items that are "luxury, entertainment, fast food, use the car less, stop buying expensive clothes."

It is ironic that the city is unable to make cuts. Why did they recently approve the waiving of tax dollars for the downtown developers.

The Mayor Villaraigos says we have no money, no dinero! No money for new cops, no money for better city services, no money for schools.

Ok, then please mayor tell me why are you doing this???

1. "The city can now proceed with the $270 million financing package for AEG Entertainment."

2. "The plan, approved by the City Council on Sept. 30, gives Wolff Development and Apollo Real Estate Advisors a $16 million, below-market loan from the Community Redevelopment Agency and $4 million in city fee waivers"

3. "The city also has agreed to forgo room-tax revenues from the hotel for 25 years" HOW MUCH MONEY IS THAT LOST FOR THE CITY AND THE PEOPLE."

4. "MAYOR ANTONIO VILLARAIGOSA'S proposal for a $1-billion city bond measure for affordable housing came as a big surprise this month, even to some of the people who build such housing." ARE THE MAYOR'S BUDDIES BENEFFITING FROM THE 1 BILLION AFFORDABLE HOUSING. WILL THEY GET GRANTS, FUNDS, BORROW MONEY FROM THIS FUND USING FAKE CONSTRUCTION PLANS AND PIMP THEM AS LUXURY HOTELS?

REMEMBER THIS ONE, IT WILL COST US ALL BIG TIME.

"The City Council last month approved an agreement with the proposed convention center hotel developers – led by Apollo Advisors, Wolff Urban Management and assisted by Anschutz Entertainment Group – to forgive up to $289 million in hotel bed taxes for 25 years."

So, Pacheco and 60 people marched with garbage cans to harass the Mayor?

Let's see. 60 people x 4 hours + 10 hours spent organizing the non-event. Equals 250 volunteer hours completely wasted.

Times 12 contacts per hour on the phone equals 3,000 voter contacts that did not happen.

Any wonder why Pacheco is losing this election?

NO TO UNIONS, PARA ABAJO CON LOS UNIONS.

The Service Employees International Union’s organizing of California’s home-health-care workers in the 1980s is a textbook example. When the courts ruled that the workers were independent contractors who could not be organized, SEIU persuaded state legislators to pass a bill allowing counties to form authorities that could hire the workers as government employees, so that they could join the union. Then the union went to work in earnest to sign them up, including 74,000 in Los Angeles County alone—the single largest successful union-organizing effort in the United States since the United Auto Workers organized General Motors in 1937.

To help finance higher pay for these workers, the union then turned back to Sacramento, persuading legislators to vote millions in aid to the counties. Though in 1998 Governor Pete Wilson vetoed the legislation as too expensive, the next year new governor Gray Davis—who had received $600,000 in campaign contributions from SEIU, his biggest supporter—signed the law. Since then, the state’s home-health-care spending has increased at nearly triple the rate of caseloads, costing taxpayers an additional three-quarters of a billion dollars. Local budgets are also straining under the pressure.

Walked precincts for Pacheco this weekend. Tough going, because people have been bombarded by Huizar's slick mailers talking about the same issues AV bombarded them with 6 months ago, and are just sick of the topic. But managed to swing a half dozen people who were voting for Huizar back to Pacheco.

Why? Simple but untold story that both campaigns are missing! The "killer app".

IT'S ONLY AN 18-MONTH interim term (at best). Once you know that, they don't even have to finish the sentence. As soon as they hear it, their eyes light up, and they know the problem... said one, "18 months? I didn't know that; why aren't more people mentioning that? I thought it was for a full four years."

"No way anyone NEW can learn the ropes and get anything done for us in that short a time. Putting anyone but Pacheco in the would be a waste of the whole period."

These people being pushed to vote for Huizar arent (all) stupid, just misinformed!

9:05 The problem with your philsophy on voter contact is this.

Let's assume your tally of 250 total volunteer hours. Here is the problem at 12 contacts per hour on the phone, at 1% Huizar success nods which I received during my volunteer hours at your office. 99% of the recipients have no idea who this guy is and when I mention LAUSD, they freak out!

You still have a 1% hit no matter how many totals you cook up.

Well, we know why Huizar's people aren't mentioning the short term left.

He's trying to ditch out on a 4-year term on LAUSD, to take a flyer on less than two years on city council, with no guarauntee of a full term after that. More potential upheaval and changing personnel for CD14 in just over a year?

He's also sentencing LAUSD to have to fill his empty seat, at a critical time when he supposedly was so instrumental to their plans to build dozens of new schools every year. What does thet mean there, yet another "special" election.

Kind of makes you wonder if it's so easy for him to skip off the school board at this point, just how important and integral was or is he to the "fixes" he supposedly made there, and that still need to be completed.

To say nothing of the building program that he "led" them into (and maybe now they won't go through with?)

We have over 8 eligible voters at my home, we are convinced Pacheco is the right person for this job.

It is 18 month job and Huizar cannot learn the ropes that fast, nor any other.

He will be manipulated by other officials and this is not what I want. I want an official who can think for himself. Not a puppet.

18 months is just fine for Pacheco to step in and do the job.

I don't have time to find out of all of the mistakes Huizar will do.

I don't want to hear, "It's ok, he is new to this, or sorry, he just started and will learn next time!"

This CD14 race is so important to you guys, because whoever holds that seat will sit on the Ethics and Oversight committee, with the winner of CD10 Herb Wesson.

I wonder why Tony Montana, I mean Antonio Villaraigosa is pressing Huizar so hard, because this will be the final piece in orchestrating his political machine, the most important piece, covering up your lies. Huizar is easily manipulated.

With Pacheco on that committee, he'll see it first hand and can ship Laura Chick and Villaraigosa out on their fannies when they go for higher office. This ensures that Mayor Villaraigosa stays as mayor and works well for the good of the city or that it begins the true clean-up of Los Angeles!

Huizar said he would ...
Pacheco said he would not ...

Here is the link.

http://www.boulevardsentinel.com/10-2005.htm

Here is a little more of the article.

Huizar Endorsed by Northeast Democrats

On Wednesday, September 21, 68% of the Northeast Democrats voted to endorse José Huizar for Councilman of the 14th District. Seven of the ten candidates were there to participate in a candidate forum where they all had the opportunity to answer questions.

...

One very stunning issue that was brought up was the question of whether the candidates would support an additional fee for trash pick-up. Huizar said he would support it if it were equitable, and Nick Pacheco said he would not support an additional fee.

The reason for that is obvious. When the only "positives" you have to play with for your candidate are those "borrowed" from the people endorsing him, you have to start dishing out old lies on the opponent.

Stick to issues? Only one candidate in CD14 race knows the issues well enough to do that.

Here's a campaign issue i care about - ETHICS.

Pacheco the most ethically challenged councilman in eastside history wonders why he lost his city council seat?

Easy one there joe -- you are an unethical SOB.

Recall CAL Inc -- i mean if it was such a worthy organization why call Lobbyists who had clients with pending city business to donate to the non-profit?

Seems fairly unethical to me.

And yet he then leases the use of the phonebanks to an even more questionable organization that doesn't even exist anymore. Fly by night AMWAY seems more like it.

Then LA Colectiva starts up with the same band of friends that have been with Nick from the get-go go and do illegal phonebanking calls on the same phones that CAL inc used that Nick Pacheco fundraised for -- seems quite obvious that lil nikcy wanted to build a machine on the backs of slimy lobbyist.

Yeah, i think we all want a pit bull fighting for us, but when this (nick pacheco) pit bull constantly bites the mail man --he;s not doing anyone any favors, just creating more ethical and legal problems for the district and the City.

Also if Nick thinks ethics is important -- why support Jim Hahn in 05? The most investigated administration since Frank Shaw?

Because Nick doesn't care to look at one ethics, he looks at what they can do for him now, to punish his enemies despite the district.

Did it even imply that AV was in violations of Ethics?

All I implied that AV used Ethics and "Pay for Play" as his campaign stance, but most of the commissioners thus far have some relation to a campaign contribution or related to a political ally, ie Bill Burke or Bonnie Parks, or Barbara Yaroslavsky.

So in other words Ethics is a bullshit political term. Cause one's ethical standard might be to tell the truth or to lie, it varies on the person.

Hey there buddy, i thought i just posted where more money than 13 other districts was going, but i suppose thats not good enough for you right? Is the glass always half-empty -- but its sad to see you go negative when all i did was post the postive stuff he did as a school board member.

Oh wait, you grew up in the nick pacheco school of politics, you must have taken those leadership classes nick paid for with funny money.

Okay, that's it. I will spend every waking moment from now until the elecion working on Jose's campaign. I'll phone bank, I'll walk precincts. I'll do anything I can to help him.

We should pay our own trash fees. There isn't ONE good reason why the City of Los Angeles should be the only city in the whole country that lets the general fund pick it up.

Thanks to my friends who alerted me to this thread.

See ya...Nick. We have tons and tons of issues and you just had to choose the one that I've spent 10 freaking years on. What's next? You want to bring up billboards on the freeways?

I hope you lose easily.

anon 5:00pm, is that why Mt Washington School is asking local associations and homeowner groups for money to buy basic school materials?

And let's see what Parke Skelton says about his client, Jose Huizar, in the Daily News: "He's well known and has done a good job fund raising." Nothing about any good work Huizar had done at the LAUSD. Why, Skelton could have been talking about Arnold, "He's well known and has done a ao good job fund raising".

PS. Mt. Washington elementary is in David Tokofsky's district.

4:32 Based on Campaign 101, Huizar broke every rule you posted. Too bad, I saw Alvin Parra, Jennie, Monica, Lisa in Huizar's campaign posters...is that legal?

OH yea, big loss kim thompson. A few weeks back you had already backed up Jose publicly on this blog. Why do you make it sounds as if it's all of a sudden scenario? Think of another stunt. The bull shit Jose comes up with will not be tolerated by us average joe voters. BTW, who cares about you, I don't, just like you don't give a crap about CD 14 in supporting Jose. You support him because you do not have to live and tolerate the abuse from these politicians.

Growth in schools revenue in Cd14 has FAR more to do with the comparative increases in the number of students attending school here than in most districts, which have declining enrollment. Likewise Perry's area; NOT whether Huizar was representing part of this district.

The real question that his supporters have ignored when raise here 65 times, is why what's needed MOST - the new Northeast high school to offload 3 other packed HS's has been ambushed and possibly scuttled by a guy who ran IE promos for AV in the last election, and why the Huizar-led board ALLOWED this?

Bad scam attempt there, Boo Boo, but some of the bloggers here are smarter than the average blogger.

OR, if you're trying to say that Huizar pumped more money in Cd14 because he knew he was going to run here -- then SHAME on him.

THAT deserves an ethics probe, at the very least - loading up service in an area you know you need to look like Santa Claus in -- in order to get your next job??

Is Jim Hahn under investigation for any crimes?

Has he been charged with any crimes?

Is he out on bail pending some trial?

How come the only place his "criminality" comes up (without any facts attached, of course), is in gossip mills like this?

"Most invesitigated" in today's slime-is-the-standard political climate can just equal "most political enemies" - and end up being NOTHING more.

I have to laugh out loud when I hear people talk about L.A. being at the start of a "new political era," especially after the last election, which ran more like a communist show trial than an actual election.

"You are charged (because someone dropped a dime on you), so you MUST be guilty. OFF with his career."

Villaraigosa wants a communist style operation. The people bought into it. He controls all parts of city government, he even wants LAUSD control, but not for what it seems, it will be only to control the flow of funds. He doesn't give a crap about

http://www.nickpacheco.com/press/CLCendorse.pdf

So you know whats great about the Pacheco campaign.

They literally have to have folks on the payroll to get their endorsement.

http://ethics.lacity.org/efs/public_search_results.cfm?idd=17&more=16&requesttimeout=1000&requesttimeout=1000&SCHEDULE=C%2CE%2CF%2CH&rept_type=AllExp&doc_id_list=3806%2C3847%2C3849&viewtype=pf

So if you go to the above link -- you'll see that Art Pulido was paid $1,500 right before the CLC endorsed.

And if you look at the press release, you'll notice that Art Pulido is the contact person for the media, which rightfully ignored the story.

But here is the question, since Ethics has been a topic of some conversation -- what does it mean when a campaign pays someone off for an endorsement?

Quid Pro Quo -- isn't that illegal? Hmmm very interesting indeed.

Those losers don't even go to community meetings and never ever respond to the constituents. Seniors can't stand them and that's why they will vote for Pacheco. They don't want the same b.s. they got with Antonio.

Serious question for 4:32 p.m. poster. . .

And you are, whose "campaign manager?"

Funny how Ace Smith was ALWAYS out front to talk to the cameras when AV's people went screaming in from of Hahn's campaign offices about, someone crumpling their art project, or some silly thing.

But, they won, didn't they.

Better re-enroll him in your "class" for managers.

I never publicly backed Huizar. I don't even know him. All I said was that Pacheco did not return my phone calls or emails the last time there was a trash related thread. I DO care about CD 14, whether you care about CD 12 or not. You are wrong to say that. I care about every single council district and I'm a very, very hard worker. I love LA. So you obviously don't know me at all.

Go Jose!

Repeating this, from above, for 6:17 p.m., who seems to have missed it's point:

"Huizar supporters still want to make this fight about who's supporting which candidate (working for which candidate, endorsing which candidate), and not about who the candidates THEMSELVES ARE, and what they can and will do for the district.

If I had been told by the mayor of support Huizar, or else, I'd want the fight to be about that, as well. Slim pickings, but better than having to defend Huizar and the record of LAUSD.

"who" not "what". . . stick to those "guns" Who-zaristas - the "accomplishment" cannons are empty, again.

It's a cute, trite, fairly tale expression, that "birds of a feather" -- but it has about as much to do with the reality of politics as "Mary had a little lamb."

If it were true, judging from where Huizar's money and support are coming from, then he would "be" an out-of-district, wealthy developer, property manager, or lawyer - which accounts from more then half the money he's working with now.

You would think that with the passing of an honorable politican like Edward Roybal today's Latino politicans would learn respect, dignity, character, integrity, doing things quietly behind the scenes and not wanting the limelight and working "for the people." When you have such out of touch Latino politicans like Antonio, Molina, Reyes, Padilla, Alatorre, Hernandez, Nunez, Jose and the rest who are as corrupt as they come, work for themselves, and USE their people to get in office then the hell with us. It sad to think the old school good Latino politicans who didn't embarrass us are few and far between now. May you rest in peace Honorable Edward Roybal, and thank you for your character.

Inexperienced? Yes, somewhat.

Poorly advised? Even more so. He's not getting "wisdom" from those who broke the path open like the late great public servant, Roybal. He's taking cues from the same kind of paid, aloof, class-conscious hacks that every other over-funded, under-experienced politician is.

Arrogant? You BET. When it comes too easy, handed to you (politically) like some rich spoiled heir to the throne, instead of fought for and sweated over, you start to think like all the bean counters and career bureaucrats that sit at your round table.

Don't worry. If he wins, he won't really be around long. This kind never is.
