Nice job dems. Sit silently while the right gets an even more right winger that you cant stop instead of supporting Bush when he sends up someone the right cant stand.
Win the battle: make Bush look bad in short run.
Lose the war: End up with right winger on Supreme Court for life.

The Democrats are so used to letting the Republicans set the agenda that they are powerless to do anything but bellyache and whine.
The previous poster got it right; the Democrats shold have jumped up and pushed hard for an early confirmation and stopped that idiot Leahy from complaining about the questionairees and other minutia.
The Democrats missed a golden chance to put a nobody on the court; now they have got a stawart, unquestionally qualified conservative guy who will be there another 20 years and who can move other justices with his logic and ability to persuade.
Good going Leahy, Shumer and Kennedy. You guys need have done it again, snatched defeat from the jaws of victory and gained a glorious loss.

Don't go blaming Dems. The fact is that this country voted in a conservative republican president. The president nominates candidates to the Supreme Court - that's one of his duties.
If we end up with a conservative justice, voters will have to live with it. If they unravel Roe v. Wade, women in this country will have to live with it. If they turn back civil rights progress, minorities and women will have to live with it. If they uphold the corporate rights over individual rights, then everyone will have to deal with it.
Maybe in another 20 years or so when there's turnover on the Supreme Court, Americans will consider who they elect as President.

9:24: Though you don't like Bush, he did send up someone risking the rath of the right only to be left twisting in the wind by the dems with no support on either side of the aisle. No, I do blame them. When a RARE move toward the center occurs, they should have seized it and come out swinging that there not be litmus tests on abortion for selecting judges. Too gleefully they watched Bush suffer only to lose in the long run.
And, for the record, Nancy Pelosi is the most venomous person ever in the job. Every time she talks, it doesn't swing me towrd the dems, it sends me straight to the dark side instead.

Those worried about "turn back Civil Rights" are still fighting the battles of 1964, the "heyday" of liberalism. Get over it. Those battles been won and are long over. If RvW is overturned it will go back to a State issue, something that everyone seems to not bother mentioning. If California can elect a blowhard like Babs Boxer is there any chance that abortion would be made illegal?
11:18 - You can't be serious about Bush's first choice. No one knew anything about her. She had no record. She made people on both sides of the aisle scared. You don't go supporting someone if you know nothing about them, even if your opponent opposes them.
4:23 - those battles are clearly not over. A basic review of social stats proves that, unless of course, you believe that African Americans and Latinos (in particular) are genetically inferior and therefore are doing the very best they can in our society.
Don't get me wrong, I think there's far too much blaming of society and not enough focus on personal responsibility. That said, society needs to address its problems. Remember when we saw HIV/AIDS as a "gay" issue and did nothing? When we finally addressed it as a public health problem affecting everyone, we began to change the tide and started saving lives - gay and straight.
