The Sammy's

Unknown to Mayor Sam i feel as tough we should create a "Sammy" award to the best political predictions made this election season.

Here are my thoughts - please add your own.

Best political prediction - Kam Kuwata proclaimed San Francisco chronicle that they could lose by 20 points -- they lost by 17-18 points (depending on the provisionals).

Worst political prediction - Sacramento Nighties - with his consistent 52-48 prediction for Mayor Hahn, sacramento nighties needs a Los Angeles day to realize he's not in sacramento anymore.

Most consistent Hahn hater -" MEAT" with the taunts and comments he gave a lot of pro-hahn bloggers many upset stomachs.

Most consistent Villaraigosa hater- "Sacramento Nighties" with his registration of ADV he slammed Antonio enough to get his spin on other websites.

Any other awards?

What a great way to start Antion! Now the LA Times reports

Voter Discontent Drives Villaraigosa to Victory

Many of his supporters were driven more by dissatisfaction with Hahn than by allegiance to Villaraigosa. And Villaraigosa has earned few fans in Los Angeles for his work on the City Council, where he did little to take on the most vexing issues facing the city.

On the campaign trail, he often avoided direct answers to tough questions about his campaign fundraising and his legislative record, a habit his opponent exploited to tag him as untrustworthy.

And in the face of momentous civic problems, Villaraigosa has made big — some say unrealistic — promises.

On one issue, he has already stumbled. Villaraigosa, who promised to clean up City Hall, takes office amid a criminal inquiry into whether donations to his mayoral campaign from employees of a Florida airport concessionaire were laundered.

Villaraigosa's broad coalition could also complicate his job, forcing him to navigate between numerous competing interests. "You've got to make a lot of choices, and that's a real challenge of coalition politics, but it can also open doors," said Cal State Fullerton political scientist Raphael Sonenshein, an authority on Los Angeles city politics.

Villaraigosa impressed fewer people in two years on the City Council. He pushed only one major initiative in his first year, an as yet unrealized plan to lower the cost of prescription drugs.

Well, I'd like to say I predicted pretty well. I said that Villaraigosa would beat Hahn 59%-40%. And Villaraigosa won 59%-41% , so I say I was more on target than Kam Kuwata. But I don't get an award since I've been anonymous all the time although today I'll reveal myself. I did do a lot of trash talking against Nate Holden though.

I think Athena gets an award for being the most rational and intelligent poster in the race. Oh and also I'd like to thank Westsider for his prediction that Bill would defeat Flora.

I had mentioned on this site before, if AV won there would be riots. AV is a false candidate, no substance and today at Taft the LAUSD is trying to cover up and say it is not a racially motivated fight that happened before AV showed up. Parents of the students are saying LAUSD officials lied and that it was a riot against Blacks and Hispanics.

Read this:

Said Villaraigosa: "I've been briefed by the principal and the superintendent. I can only go on what I've been told. I've been told (there were) three different fights of two people, that at least four of the people - - the one-on-one fights -- were from the same ethnicity or race."

But some parents interviewed by reporters at the scene insisted otherwise, contending the disturbance was racially motivated and involved black and Hispanic students.

A woman who said she has two daughters at the school told KCAL9: "They told us that there (were) only three fights, and that the kids were running to the fights, but that's not the truth.

"My daughter called on her cell phone, and she was crying and screaming that it was a riot, and that she had been hit in the head," the woman said. "And so, the school never called me. I (could) hear kids screaming frantically in the background."

According to Ramirez of LAUSD, the school was locked down briefly, but by late morning things were back to normal. Classes were to be dismissed this afternoon at the usual time, she said.

VILLARAIGOSA IS PATHETIC!

LA High School In Lockdown
Another LA High School is in lockdown this morning, following a fight said to involve hundreds of students.
The fight apparently broke out on the woodland hills campus around 10 am.

Officers from the LAPD's West Valley Division are on the scene, with more LA school police on their way from downtown Los Angeles.

Most of the students are now in their classrooms and the school is on lockdown.

Police say six students are in custody, but at this time the exact reason is unknown.

Officers have set up a mobile command center and school officials are deciding whether to let students leave or resume classes.

Student violence breaks out at Taft HS

By Josh Kleinbaum
Staff Writer

WOODLAND HILLS - A series of fights broke out today at Taft High School ahead of a scheduled visit by Mayor-elect Antonio Villaraigosa, and school officials disputing claims by parents and students who said the brawls appeared racially motivated.
As many as 17 patrol cars and an LAPD helicopter were dispatched to the Ventura Boulevard campus about 10 a.m., a Los Angeles Police Department spokeswoman said.

Taft Principal Sharon Thomas said there were three separate fights among ninth-graders lining up to take standardized tests in a multi-purpose room. Six students were detained for questioning and the others were sent to their home rooms, she said.

Sandra Torres, 18, a senior, said she saw a number of students hop a fence onto campus and run toward a group of students.

"They started beating up on anybody they came across. There must have been 50 people involved. Ten people were hurt with bloody noses (and) lying on the ground.

"It was a lot of violence," she said. "I was scared."

Thomas and Los Angeles Unified School District Superintendent Roy Romer said the fights were not between Latino and African-American students, despite what many students reported.

"It was a limited thing," Romer said. "It was not racial."

Villaraigosa, appearing with Romer during a news conference, reiterated district officials' comments that the violence was not racially motivated.

But Erika Robles, 17, a junior, said the fighting occurred between African-American and Latino students.

About 40 parents rushed to the campus, many of them called by students using cell phones.

Carletha Lee, whose nieces and nephews attend the campus, said the district and the mayor-elect were not being candid with parents.

"You can only stomach so much, the fact that (Villaraigosa) is downplaying a serious situation.... He wants to discount this as a simple fight between students. We clearly know this is not the case," she said.

The same race scenario is being pushed by LAUSD and AV, the students and parents say otherwise. Pretty lame that you call that just a "good ol fashion school yard" since you might not regard those LAUSD students important enough for better terms.

Councilmember Nick Pacheco (Ret.) to Announce Decision Whether to Return and Serve in His Council District

LOS ANGELES (May 18, 2005) -- With the Election of Councilmember Antonio Villaraigosa to the Office of Mayor, many are speculating whether Councilmember Nick Pacheco
will return to serve in his council district. Join Nick on Thursday, May 19th at 12:00 pm (noon), when he will announce his decision whether to return and serve as Councilmember of the Fourteenth District.

The announcement will take place at the site of the future Boyle heights Youth & Technology Center, located on the southeast corner of 4th and Gless. When in office,
Councilmember Pacheco secured $9 million for the new Center, which will house the Youth Opportunity Movement, provide high-tech training and computer skill development to local youth.

Pacheco represented the Fourteenth Council District for six years (1997-2003), two as an elected Los Angeles Charter Reform Commissioner and four as a Councilmember.

Aside from a brief stint away from college, Pacheco has never left the Fourteenth Council District. He was born in Boyle Heights, the son of hard-working immigrant
parents.

Nick attended Loyola High School after the Principal noticed his intellectual ability and gave him a scholarship. He went on to graduate from the University of Berkeley ’88 and Loyola Law School ’94. After passing the Bar, he practiced as a Criminal
Prosecutor with the Los Angeles County District Attorney's Office for close to five years. He was then elected to the Los Angeles City Council in 1999.

Nick has lived his entire life in the Fourteenth Council District -- thirty seven years in Boyle Heights and the last four years Eagle Rock has been his home.

ADV people who campaigned hard for him will now go to Pacheco's team. They hated ADV and now they all say Pacheco really careed about the commuity.

The only reason ADV won Latino vote is because sneaky Southwest helped him out.

For the mayoral election, SVREP launched non-partisan GOTV campaigns in more than 400 precincts and turned out an estimated 25,000 new Latino voters from a pool of about 37,000 targeted voters who had never before voted in an election. As part of its arsenal, SVREP aired more than 400 spanish-language television and 60 radio commercials. It positioned over 300 get-out-and-vote billboards across targeted Los Angeles area neighborhoods and ran an aggressive walk and telephone program with more 400 volunteers that visited in excess of 10,000 households and made more than 100,000 phone calls from 6 different phone banks using 52 phoners at any given time.

Finally, SVREP also sent out more than 50,000 vote-by-mail applications to first time Latino voters and an additional 50,000 voter education mail pieces. By sponsoring 54 other community groups, churches, and businesses across the City of Los Angeles, SVREP was able to increase voter registration among Latinos by nearly 13,000 voters, raising the number of registered Latinos to almost 350,000.
