That's what happened when a piece at MyLANews.com reported that Hollywood Hills resident Eugene Matthews filed suit against CD4 candidate Sheila Irani, for allegedly chopping down trees on his neighboring property. Irani has denied the charges.
Where it becomes a sticky wicket is that Matthews is reportedly a major supporter of Irani's opponent, Tomas O'Grady.
And that wicket becomes stickier a O'Grady, in distancing himself from Matthews, did not condemn Matthews apparent theatrics as being in bad form (particularly in that they would potentially benefit O'Grady) but approached a victim like stance telling participants on a community Facebook page that he wished to be "left out of it."
O'Grady further steps in it it with a blog post "Please Leave Tomas O'Grady Out These Disputes" (with apparently the same headline proofing troubles MyLANews.com has) singing "Don't cry for me, Silver Lake / Los Feliz" cementing in this blogger's mind that the good Mr. O'Grady is not ready (after a previous run for Council four years ago) for prime time and will not be able to do battle as a Council Member in the matter that his District would need, now more than ever.
Mayor Sam...oh, I expected so much more from you....tell me it ain't so.
ReplyDelete#1 Mr. Matthews is not a "major" supporter of the O'Grady campaign, in fact, according to the Los Feliz Ledger, an Irani supporter btw, "According to city records filed with the Los Angeles City Ethics Commission, Matthews has not made a donation to any of the 14 candidates running in the District 4 election." So, I guess his "major" support lies in the lawn signs on his property. ahem...
#2 This lawsuit has nothing to do with the O'Grady campaign but it certainly makes for a much juicer story to say it does. O'Grady is spot on for staying out of it, because it's irrelevant.
#3 Lastly, according to the lawsuit filed, Ms. Irani cut down her neighbors trees because he wouldn't do it himself after she repeatedly asked him to. Huh? What's wrong with that picture?
Sorry Ms. Irani, if the allegations are true, then you broke the law last summer and your neighbor is taking you to court. It's irrelevant when the papers were filed.
And yes, I'm an O'Grady supporter.
Regardless of how Mr. O'Grady's supporters spin it, this stinks. It smells more like dirty tricks that we are used to during Presidential races in our country. But dirty tricks for a local election?
ReplyDeleteThis lawsuit has no place in the election debate and has no relevance to Ms. Irani's character or suitability to serve. It is an allegation from a neighbor that waited one year to make claims against her neighbor.
Unfortunately, dirty tricks work well in our elections and changes the conversation from the candidates abilities to non-related issues.
Also, please remember that all of us are assumed to be Innocent until proven otherwise.
Mayor Sam, I couldn't disagree with you more on this. You're spreading lies and you should do a little more research before you type. Ms. Irani needs to stay on her own side of the fence.
ReplyDeleteIt does stink. O'Grady wimped out on it too. How can he do battle for our community if he's a wimp?
ReplyDeleteWe didn't lie about anything, this was reported in the news and comes from Facebook comments O'Grady made as well as his own website. Unless you are saying that Irani was posing as him and wrote the newspaper article, lol. The O'Grady spinners sure are having some issues it seems!
ReplyDeleteWith today's L. A. Times article about ethical issues alleged by two former O'Grady interns -- coupled with O'Grady's smarmy counter-attack against one of the interns -- this candidate is smelling like burned toast to me.
