New Public Policy Institute of California Poll Results
A new Public Policy Institute of California survey that came out today shows an 8 point lead for Jerry Brown, Proposition 19 (the marijuana legalization initiative) losing support, Proposition 23 (the Texas Oil/Koch Bros backed prop) headed for defeat, and 6 out of 10 Californians struggling to pay their rent or mortgage.
Jerry Brown leads Meg Whitman by 8 points in the governor’s race.
Proposition 19- Support 44% Oppose 49%
Proposition 23- Support 37% Oppose 48%
62% of Californians surveyed by PPIC say they're worried about having enough money to pay their rent or mortgage.

I think the commenter isn't complaining about getting posted, but about the lack of integrity in things Joe posts.
In fact, I've tried to comment about the SF Chronicle's failure to endorse Boxer, and Joe regularly declined to post it, but Higby did. No impoliteness. Joe has a rep for often disallowing things that are contrary to his views.
I'm no fan of Higby's views, but he allows dissent, and Joe more often than not, doesn't. Just my p.o.v.
Namecalling? You mean, like Higby and Co. calling people Dum Dum, Homeless Economist and mocking people mercilessly?

I think, regrettably, that Jerry Brown will win, but I don't need a repetitive poll to tell me that. Actually, there's nothing new in any of the polls Joe has posted in the past month. Issues.
What I don't get is WHY anyone would WANT to be Governor.
The state is going to go bankrupt on their watch. It'll be healthy, since it'll break a lot, if not all, union deals.
Pity the Governor who has to preside over a state's bankruptcy. Here's hoping that the City of LA does the same.
What's even more interesting than the relatively small leads the Democratic candidates have in a Democratic state are the double-digit "undecideds" just a couple of weeks before the election.
Independents, like yours truly, don't like our choices in EITHER party. Whitman and Fiorina absolutely give me the creeps, and Boxer and Brown would continue California's downward spiral.
So will independents decide that the billionaire / millionaire Republican candidates are the lesser of two evils? Or will they instead make a "protest" vote for candidates like Chelene Nightingale and/or Libertarian candidates, knowing that doing will give the election to the Democrats?
Walter I'm not thrilled with Whitman or Fiorina but there is no way at this time we can give the keys to Babs Boxer and doddering old Gov Moonbeam.
As for Whitman, she takes so many positions on any given issue, you have no idea what she would do if elected. We're talking "pig in a poke."
Plus, all her grandiose plans about tax cuts, etc. indicate she and everyone else has forgotten ninth grade civics. Governors don't pass laws. They can veto bills; they can, in California, line-item veto budget items; and they can run departments. They cannot change tax laws or regulations.
Brown, moreover, claims he will not raise taxes without voter approval. So I'm not sure it really would make much difference.
As for Boxer, she's already been in office forever anyway. Is she suddenly going to accelerate the death spiral of California and the U.S.
Don't get me wrong: I think Boxer and Brown are a disaster. I just happen to believe that Whitman and Fiorina are, too. This can't be the best we can do, I hope.

Fiorina creeps me out the most, so I won't vote for her. I'm an "undecided" on Brown / Whitman. Neither one will solve the problems. For me it comes down to the immigration issue. Who do you think will take a stand on it?
Brown was a good Governor and he will be a good Governor again. Brown didn't like Prop 13 but he made it work. When he was Governor, we used to call California a "recession-proof" state because it did better in Carter/Reagan's recession than the rest of the country did. In 1992, part of his campaign schtick was to toss out the tax code, something that should appeal to Republicans.
Whitman, conversely, would have been even more helpless as Governor than Arnold was. She thinks money takes care of things but in Sacto political talent takes care of everything, and she has absolutely none. The eminent domain case she joined in Telluride, Colorado to protect her home there is very telling as to her true character, as was the maid fiasco. Like most CEO's, she's simply a compulsive, unscrupulous liar. I suspect she'll go live in her Telluride home after she gets her ass kicked.

Joe must be worried, since he has to keep telling himself that Brown will win.....Polls are just that, polls. The only one that counts is November 2nd.

Who de-funded road construction and infrastructure in California during his term, and put the money in the general fund, wasted on social programs? Hmmm....Jerry Brown!!! Who appointed the notoriously anti death penalty Rose Bird as Calif Chief Justice.....hmmmm.....Jerry Brown!! Who opposed Prop 13, before he was for it.......Jerry Brown!! Boy I really want that crap all over again!!
It would be a big mistake to write off eMeg, HP_Fiorina or many other 'non-Democrat' candidates just yet.
Brown's 9 point lead could have the effect of lulling dems into a false sense of security, so they won't vote, while at the same time, it might motivate the angry reps to get out and vote. The angry reps will follow the party line, so all other rep candidates benefit from the 'Jerry' effect.
Also, don't misunderestimate the huge number of undecideds. There's enough there to swing things either way.

Maybe you should learn there's a difference between being an actual "independent" and being so far off-base on nearly every critical issue that people don't want to be associated with you, or be in the same "party" (as whatever the heck you actually are now?)

I think it fooled Arnold too, who thought he was going to waltz in, snuff the unions, and drive a Hummer through the holes in the budget. Hah hah hah we have a more progressive state than ever. Now close a few prisons, trim pension a little and we'll be set. Jerry can do that; Meg's big idea is to ship as many good jobs as possible to India. And who the hell wants to compete with China? It is easier to grow rice in the Sacto delta than to make TVs better than servile-labor China; and it pays way better too. Republicans--too stupid to understand that they are voting for their own enslavement, time and time again.
You're gonna puke. Matt Dowd and Zuma Dogg just had the sound ban and lottery permit system overturned at Venice Beach by a federal judge. That's why they showed up to city hall council meetings in the first place. Way to go Nuch. They didn't even have an attorney.
10:22 -- I don't think either Whitman or Brown will do anything about illegal immigration.
2:47 -- Have you looked at the statistics on how very many people are now independent? You may think one of the two parties is just perfect. Many of us, however, think each party has good and bad ideas.
Democrats, for example, want to protect the environment, protect workers, and ensure everyone gets an opportunity to achieve. Those are good goals.
Republicans, at least in theory, want limited taxation, limited spending, and a strong military. Those are good goals, too.
But if you sign up for the full Democratic package, you wind up with a group of people who think there is no limit on how much you should tax, spend and regulate. And if you instead go with the full Republican package, you have to be anti-choice, anti-gay marriage, and super-religious. Many of us don't go for the package deal.
I think there's an optimal level of government, less than we have now, but more than dog-eat-dog anarchy. If that's wrong, I don't want to be right.
