Fear and loathing right on your block

It's bad enough to be scared by media into spending precious minutes of your life worrying about the West Nile Virus crisis.

After all, a whopping 120 Californians have caught the WNVirus this year, rendering your chances of you succumbing to it roughly the same as you winning a Pick Six at Santa Anita---whether you go to the track or not. (Note how media frame these numbers, though---"a five-fold increase"!)

But here's the latest fearmongering twist on it all: the fishwrap of record wants you to worry about the West Nile Virus crisis whenever you worry about the subprime foreclosure crisis.

You just can't make this stuff up.

Whatever you do today, don't go outside. You might pass a foreclosed house with a swimming pool and catch a disease that has thus far afflicted 120 out of 37,000,000 of us this year.

The Los Angeles Times story just needed to tell us that Al-Qaeda cells were hiding in the foreclosed homes and breeding swarms of mosquitoes infected with the West Nile virus, and will be used as the next WMD (weapon of mass destruction). How do you spell P-A-R-A-N-O-I-A ?

I wonder if there is a horse named "West Nile Virus" running at Santa Anita this might be a sign from above.

Right.

And how many Californians got killed in traffic accidents last year?

Or, better yet, how many Californians, how many Americans, have been killed by illegals? A FAR more important question than WNV ....

Too bad you don't understand exponential increases.

Snooze a little in your high school math class?

Get a little remedial tutoring... then reconsider why a "fivefold increase" might be significant.

Dumbass.

8:58 must be one of those dumberasses who screams "100% earnings increase!" when a stock goes from a penny of earnings to two pennies of earnings.

They aren't bringing WNV, they are sharing better things like Chagas ... all kinds of parasites and diseases that are on the increase in border states at present which were never an issue here before ...

Never an issue before? Gee, who brought measles, smallpox, syphillis, ......

Again whites redefining history. Tenochtitlan was the cleanest city in the world at the time of the conquest - the normal routine was a steam bath and a regular bath - everyday. Public drunkeness was punishable by death and the streets were as clean as coul be. At this time Europeans bathed just once a year and then piled on all that perfume. Not a bad place to live if you could stomach the human sacrifices.

A woman down the street from me died from it. She'd never thought it was likely either. Wasn't that just the funniest coincidence?

11:03: That's kind of a big "if" as an exchange regular bathing: ritual disembowelments, and chopping off the heads of the losing side in those ball games your superior beings had. Not that there aren't some who wouldn't like to have seen a little more discipline for the Chivas team.

Oh, and current theory is that the Aztec and Mayan "civilizations" died out because they killed too many people, not just a few priests and foreigners here and there. But their own peasants, too.

In fact, the more they killed, the fewer they had left to do the menial work like tilling the fields and making pots and such -- the "religious elite" were too busy figuring out the right times to disembowel people and throw virgins into wells to appease the gods.

West Nile virus started on the east cost about 20 years ago. It was thought that it would be transmitted between horses only. As it came across the continent, from one state to another, eventially it was found that people were starting to be infected. Its not the "illegials", its the dumb people who leave water standing

Don't know if you were aware, but we are talking about NOW ... Chagas is widespread in most of South America and most of Mexico ... and now it is appearing here, along with brainworms, increased TB, etc. What went on in Mexico hundreds of years ago is not a real concern right here, right now.

And if we were to compare civilizations and accomplishments, the Mayans and Aztecs aren't going to stand up to the test. And whatever accomplishments they may have managed, the brain capacity to do so seems to have vanished completely from their surviving descendants ...

3:29: If you can separate the topic of disease from the "I hate Mexicans and the Mayor" theme that permeates every thread here, you have a point.

But TB is more widespread across the world: at least 100,000 known cases of antibiotic-resistant types in India and China each, probably more. The kind they thought Whats It had, though he actually had a milder form.

Instead of treating him like the most evil person on the face of the earth, an intentional Typhoid Mary, why doesn't the CDC warn travelers what to expect when traveling, and how to protect themselves? And if there are diseases coming up here from Latin America, that, too. To say they don't want to scare us is no answer. To expose us to known dangers without telling us is wrong.
