How To Bust Gridlock, Not The Budget

Plank No. 4 of my platform, which I've already discussed here, is called the "Walking in L.A." initiatives. The focus of that plank is to make it easier for people to live closer to their jobs -- within walking distance.
Plank No. 5 of my platform is designed for the people who can't or won't move closer to their jobs. We don't have to spend billions on subways, elevated trains, or light rail. Rather, we need to use our existing infrastructure -- a fancy word for "streets" -- more efficiently. Take a minute or two to see how it can be done: MooreIsBetter.com.
My favorite part of the plan, based on personal experience riding one in Paris, is the use of Segways. The next time you're in Santa Monica or Burank, rent one and take it for a spin. Tell them L.A.'s next mayor sent you. Then use my name so they'll know what the heck you're talking about.

...Maddox has benefited from his proximity to Villaraigosa. Last year, one of the mayor's campaign committees paid $25,000 to Maddox's public affairs consulting firm, Dakota Communications, to drum up support among African American ministers for Villaraigosa's school takeover legislation.
As per my platform, we should stop charging people to ride the bus. The fares cover only a tiny fraction of the operating costs. Eliminating fares, moreover, will let the bus get all aboard and get moving faster. We need to make bus travel as attractive as possible to get people out of their cars.
Walter, if people won't even switch light bulbs, why would they get out of their car?
if anything, we need a lightweight 2 person vehicle, and dedicate special lanes.
This city is beyond fixing, nobody is going to change sh*t in all reality.
The car is here to stay, its inextricably intertwined with Los Angeles
I like the bus fare idea. I also believe the freeway speed inside city limits should be dropped 10mph. that'll bring people from 80mph back to 70!!
the most efficient speed is actually 60mph, but it strikes me that people think 80 is the recognized acceptable speed now.
Matt -- Read the platform plank before you comment on it, would you? When you read it, you'll see why I ask you to do so. Hint: great minds think alike.

Ah, Segways, the lazy man's substitute for even the modest exercise walking represents, and Big Walt's invitation to universal obesity!
I liked every plank of your platform, Sir.
But I just don't trust you. I hope that if you are elected you don't prostitute yourself to special interests.

BTW: HPOZ's don't work all that well in my opinion. Too many times have I seen the guidelines of the HPOZ/historic preservation planning staff at odds with the guidlines of buidling and safety/plancheck counter staff. I would like to see some sort of a check list and clearly stated guidlines when the jurisdictional boundaries are unclear such as when B&S/Fire codes require certain setbackas but historic requirs a different distance. A project of mine was held up six months. Sometimes the owner chooses to do the work without permits (sometimes the city is none the wiser) or the owner simply abandons the property and becomes an absentee landlord. But it's the owner occupied rental properties that we need to look at. These folks don't have the resources...I'm rambling. I hate L.A.
