Things heating up in CD 6 race - Cardenas facing depleting support
Last week the Engineers and Architects Union endorsed an opponent of the CD6 incumbent and shortly afterwards another opponents' campaign sputtered to life... Could Tony Cardenas be in trouble?
If all you factor is money, Tony should walk away with this one but their is something to be said for a City Councilman who has managed to rack up 5 challengers, many from the Neighborhood Council who meets down the street from his field office. There is a disconnect that extends beyond the ambitions of a few individuals and the loss of the EAA endorsement is a blow to the traditionally union backed Cardenas.
Less then a day after the EAA announced its endorsement of Lisa Palmer, CD 6 candidate Jaime Corderos' campaign took on new life, in the way of paid staff. Cordero has hired a campaign manager, Marc Victoria of AV Campaigns a D.C. based firm that specializes in "underdog" candidates. Victoria is in no way a Parke Skelton, but his firm has worked on many campaigns including a few congressional races that swept the Democrats into victory in 2006.
We'll have to see how this all shakes out but one release that has gone out already demonstrates that Cordero if gunning straight for Cardenes... It defines Cardenes as "Phony Tony, the invisible Councilman." Ouch.

I give Cardenas a lot of credit because he had the guts to speak his mind against the tax ballot measure. I remember when the neighborhood councils stormed city hall on a DWP MOU that Cardenas wanted to take jurisdiction over. After hearing the NC reps speak Cardenas showed a lot of class by saying he was withdrawing his motion. In the valley he has illegal vendor sweeps and is not afraid of the backlash from the illegals.
With 3 candidates splitting the vote of that NC, they have screwed up any chance of beating Cardenas.
Recently Cardenas has actually been somewhat visible in his district and for once has taken a bold position on a measure. His staff is working full time ensuring his name appears in the media to fool his constituents into thinking he's actually doing something good for a change. We all now that after the elections it will go back to business as usual. Pathetic.
Who has the mayor endorsed in CD 6?
After several years in office, Cardenas can't even list more than a handful of accomplishments on his website because they don't exist. Community funds get re-directed to outside projects or to benefit his inner circle. Shameful.
Interesting how much of his campaign war chest is coming from out-of-state sources.

THERE CAN BE 3 VOTERS WHO PARTICIPATE AND THE PRECINCT WILL SUBMITT A TALLY OF HUNDREDS OF BALLOTS. WE ARE A VICTIM OF THE SYSTEM INTENDED TO SERVE THE PEOPLE. WELL, IF WE CONTINUE IN THE FASHION OF JUST AMUSING OURSELVES AND FOLLOWING THE FIDDLER PLAYING HIS SONG, WE WILL END UP DESTROYING THE FOUNDATION AND DREAMS OF OUR FOREFATHERS.
WHETHER IT IS CD6, CD1, OR CD14 WE MUST DO RIGHT WITH WHAT WE HAVE. I KNOW THE COUNCILMEMBERS OUT IN MY AREA WILL SURELY BE PUSHING THE BUTTONS TO HAVE CONTINUED SUCCESS. THE OUTCOME IS WHAT WE AS RESIDENTS MAKE OF THE SERVICES OFFERED BY OUR ELECTEDS.

It would be a good thing if Candido and the others - for the good of the city - dropped out now and endorsed Jamie. Jamie is in a strong position to beat Tony if the cards can be played right.

Tony is really worried that the three challengers from the same NC are going to split their 12 votes 3 ways.
Consultants will take anybody's money. Hiring one in the race for CD 6 doesn't mean a thing besides having too little good sense and too much loose cash.
You got it right, Phony Tony is certainly the invisible council member. Where and how does he spend his time? (private mtgs. with ???)
His mantra seems to be: How can I manipulate the situation to my best interest and still gain the most mileage for my career. If you can help me, than maybe I'll return your call.
He has been heard to say at community meetings in the past that he doesn't have to publicly state his position on important community concerns because "I'm not running for office." Not even a half-hearted attempt to engage in real problem solving that will actually benefit the community. All smoke and mirrors.

Cardenas is trying to manipulate his constituents in Sun Valley to believe that he has achieved a victory for them. By having Waste Management hold off on their decision to withdraw Bradley's application for the landfill expansion, he's trying to convince people he's actually working FOR them when he's probably taking favors from WM and working AGAINST the community he's supposed to represent.
But I thought the garbage dump in Sun Valley was closing?
WM wanted to shove as much garbage in their landfill as possible - even inventing "air capacity" to create a MOUNTAIN of garbage there, affectionately called 'Mount Cardenas' by the locals. Tony wants people to believe that he saved them from this mountain overshadowing Sun Valley even more.
Because I don't live in CD6, I know I'm not qualified to opine on this, given all the Mt. Cardenas trash talk (pun intended). But I do respect the guy for trying to find solutions for gang violence, and working with juvenile justice authorities.
Say what you want about Cardenas but I gotta say he's the only one I've seen in clowncil that shows he speaks from the heart and isn't afraid to say it. Janice Hahn made an ass out of herself on the gang tax ballot measure and Tony who I really thought was going to support her motion and deadline for May came out against it with strong convictions. I don't see any other council member speak out that way. They all talk like politicans.

This is what I'll say - Action and results matter, not just eleventh hour strategic moves and promises right before an election.
Reviewing Cardenas' achievements this is what I see:
1. Overall effort to enforce laws and regulations in district = F
2. Effort to provide equitable support to constituents = F (special interests given v.i.p. treatment)
3. District environmental improvements = F
4. Actions to protect the health of families in District = F
5. District quality of life improvements = F
6. Demonstrated actions/effort to gain respect and influence over City Council, Mayor, & other policy makers excluding lobbyists = F
7.Withdrew motion against tax ballet measure = C+
Mr. Cardenas still has time to demonstrate he is a leader and has the drive and desire to improve the community that he represents. Show us.
Gee I don't know where you get your grades on Cardenas but many people I know are saying the opposiite. They're happy with his performance overall and of course the negative spin cycle is in full force. None of the other candidates have his experience.

That's precisely the point. After all of Cardenas' "experience", we don't see many positive results.

At least modify your rhetoric from your stump speech if you want to pretend that you are some anonymous blogger.
You don't live in the Sixth and yet purport to know the quality of life issues. Give it a rest, those who live here know what he's done.
