From humble beginnings, the Los Angeles City Council created the Department of Parks in 1889. At that time the city owned several pieces of land that were believed suitable for park purposes. They turned over these properties to the newly-organized Department of Parks. In a generous mood during Christmas of 1896, Colonel Griffith J. Griffith offered to donate five square miles of the Los Feliz Rancho to the City as a park. He said, "it must be made a place of recreation and rest for the masses, a resort for the rank and file, for the plain people..." What followed was the development of several more parks including the original pueblo lands of the old plaza, Elysian Park, Pershing Square, and later Lincoln Park, MacArthur Park, Echo Lake Park, and Hollenbeck Park.

Thousands of local high school and college students are expected to march in downtown Los Angeles Saturday in support of undocumented workers. The march is scheduled to begin at 10 a.m.
City council replay tomorrow starting at 10a. Set your vcr's. Good stuff this week during public comment.
The correct term is illegal aliens, not "undocumented workers."

Thanks ACLU and Ramona Ripston, mayor's commissioner on homeless agsency. They won a federal lawsuit against LAPD and now thanks to them homeless people from all over US will come to LA cause cops can't arrest just because they sleep on street. Forget that drug dealers, prostitutes, and other criminals are living and exploiting the homeless. You should see the mess downtown. It looks like Beriut.

Mayor Sam, you sure are a sucker for "white washed" Los Angeles history. Griffith wasn't in a generous mood when he made his donation. After marrying one of Feliz's daughters, Griffith swindled the vast Feliz estate from Old Man Feliz himself. Being the typical white con artist of the time, Griffith used the courts and police and racists laws to end up with all that property. Old Man Feliz promised on his death bed that Griffith would never live in the home he built. And Griffth never did. Succumbing to his guilt or his fear of haunted mansions, Griffith decided to "give" his ill gotten gains to the city. Thus, Griffith Park came to be.
L.A. history is full of such stories. Too bad whites don't know much about the true history of L.A.. Want to hear the one about the 12 Chinese men hung near Union Station?

Uh, don't know how whitewashed that is - I know Mayor Sam stole that text from the City website. Not sure if our little latino mayor "whitewashes" history.
Actually, Griffith bought portions of the Rancho Los Feliz in 1882. He then turned around and made a bundle selling water rights to the city (The city's municipal water intake was at Crystal Springs -- where Wm Mulholland got his start working for the city). He donated the park land to the city in 1896.
Griffith married a wealthy socialite named Cristine Mesmer (related to the Feliz' -- I don't know). In 1903, in an alcoholic induced paranoia, he shot her through the eye at the Arcadia hotel in Santa Monica. She lived, though disfigured.
His trial was a major preoccupation, and he got off with a 2 year sentence (pleading "alcohol insanity"). After returning from prison he devoted the rest of his life to attempting to rehabilitate his good name through public spirited works -- including funding the Observatory and the Greek Theater.

Our little Latino Mayor wouldn't know where to being with the white washing of history - he's not to keen on his own history. But he sure knows how to white wash himself.
Bimbo Gloria Romero and Cedillo are telling students not to go to school on May 1 and boycott. The mayor is telling the students to stay in school. I agree with the mayor. How irresponsible for Romero to tell students as an elected offical to break the law and be truant. Romero also doesn't understand that the illegals in this city can't afford to take time off like her. They make minimum wage and don't get vacation days off. That's a lot of money for them to lose.

Pollster John Zogby said that in a survey he conducted after the protests, 61 percent said they were less sympathetic to the plight of illegal immigrants as a result of the demonstrations, compared with 32 percent who said they were more sympathetic.
