Open Thread for The Weekend
Wikipedia, the growing online source for knowledge, has an article on our mayor, Antonio Villaraigosa. You can read the article by clicking here. Since it may rain this weekend, some of you dum dums might want to see if there is anything in the article you can debunk or at least cut and paste. Of course, feel free to talk about Martin, Christopher or any other of your favorite topics. Have a great weekend. Stay dry!

Farmer's evicted!!!
In November, Mayor Villaraigosa said, "The effort was a great example of what can be accomplished when the community and elected officials work together towards a common goal — in this case, preserving green, open space for the public to enjoy." Unfortunately, he was talking about a 140-acre park in East LA. We hope that he can use his political skills to help the community at 41st and Alameda preserve their well-loved greenspace, too.

350 families have been fighting to preserve the largest contiguous piece of open green space in South Central Los Angeles for the last 3 years. Now they have been officially served by the LA County Sheriff's department and are being evicted from the oasis that they have built over the last 13 years.
The eviction notice was posted on the west gate of the South Central Farm by the Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department at 2:00pm, March 1, 2006. According to the notice, the 14 acre farm (the largest urban farm in the nation) needs to be vacated by Monday March 6, 2006. Until the end of that day, it will still be legal for the farmers to remain on the land.

MY FAVORITE:
"Our democracy works only when there is a level playing field for all the candidates and, in this case, Mr. Ludlow took an unfair advantage over his competitors," said Assistant U.S. Attorney Craig Missakian. "The money they were using belonged to the members of the labor union and these were people who worked very hard for it."

Too bad for the farmers, but there are simpe economics to this mess.
They didn't own the land, so what did you expect.

eminent domain for pimp developers but not for poor farmers
simple economics
Farmers have no money=no farm land
Developers pay for campaigns=Mucho open space to develop into high cost condos--lofts---we go up--no longer los angeles land of white picket fence 3 bed 2 bath. It's build up up and away like rats and cucarachas.

The South Central Farmers have staged numerous protest actions against Mr. Horowitz at his home and that schmuck deserves it.
Help Us Save the Largest Urban Farm in the U.S.
What: Protest in Brentwood, CA in support of the South Central Farmers.
(Some of us hope to dress as plants and hold a non-violent "die-in"
at his house, a mock demolition, like Horowitz & the city propose to do).
Where: Intersection of N. Woodburn Dr. and W. Sunset Blvd.
Los Angeles, CA 90049 (the home of greedy developer Ralph Horowitz)
When: Saturday February 11, 2006 @ 11:00a.m.
Who: “Friends of the Farm,” and all who care about the preservation
of stong communities and the co-habitation of us with our enviornment.
Anonymous said:
The Friends of the Farm should be back at his house every day until he can't stand it anymore.
One day was insufficient to properly embarrass the man.

The fact is the land has an owner. The fact is if the farmers stay they will be breaking the law. The fact is all these stupid attorneys, community activisits, professors etc. haven't been honest with the farmers. No one has told them that if they are evicted and arrested and have their children with them they will be taken away. Who is going to pay to bail them out and help them? AV didn't do anything to help the farmers.

OK, someone owns land and they want to develop it. So what if farmers are now there. If they needed that land so bad, why didn't they buy it, or have the city buy it from him and then the city sell it to them for $1.00? The city does that all the time.
I just hope that the city goes after the swap meet over in that area and works to get the illegals who are fucking the community up over there.
Or, why doesn't the city give the farmers some land in another part of the city? Instead of permitting the strip clubs in downtown, let farmers have one of those land parcels.
Or, give them something in CD 10 as a condition of Martin's punishment.
